What are some things that make Russian cats, unique?

Russian Blues are known to be amazing, gorgeous affectionate cats (we certainly feel this way!) There are many aspects to the breed that attract people. We now have Russians all over the Eastern seaboard of Australia, as well as in Victoria and are getting more enquires from other states! Living in regional NSW and the Central West makes access easy and straightforward.

So, what makes a Russian Blue, unique from other cats and other breeds. One aspect is their amazing double coat. A Russian Blue should have a velvet/mink type of coat that is very soft and plush on touch. We often find they rarely shed, except for a good shed in early spring (or sometimes during the end of summer if the Central West is chaotic!) Their coat seems to also have less allergy reactions than some other breeds.

Due to the density, it is proficient at capturing dust in the undercoat. This is also why buying a Shed-Eze or brush to remove underlayers can be important to keep this maintained, though Russians often happily do this themselves! The Russian Blye is also renowned for being less reactive for allergy sufferers. They tend to produce less Fel d 1 than other breeds, helping those with allergies. We have had many owners attend with intense allergies to cats and have few to no reaction to them when even rubbing them on their faces!

Russians are also renowned for their calm, relaxed yet curious temperaments. They can be shy with strangers until they feel comfortable and are also very curious! We often teach our Russians tricks, such as ‘high five’ or ‘paw’ using naturalistic training techniques. They can learn a variety of techniques with time and positive reinforcement.  Russians are also known to strongly bond to their families, and at times, to one person they consider their ‘person’ (are we the pet?!?) This strong bonding is often attractive to our owners who want them as companion emotional support animals.

Russians are also known for their vivid, green eyes, which when contrasted to a black or blue coat, looks amazing! Often in the afternoon when with the cats, you can see the amazing green and silver shimmer from their coats. The hairs have a tip on the end which provides this effect for the Russian Blue. Due to this, their coat and calm, patient temperament, they often make an ideal companion and emotional support animal. This also means they are often highly sought after, thus we encourage those wishing to proceed purchasing a kitten to join the waitlist to avoid disappointment, as we rarely have cats freely available outside this.
